On
the Great Gohonzon Mandala
On
the Great Gohonzon Mandala of the Nichiren School, we find two Esoteric
characters in ancient Sanskrit script, rather than like the rest,
which are Chinese calligraphy. These two protective deities guard
the entrance way to many a Buddhist Temple.
So, why did
Nichiren place them on the Gohonzon. Perhaps it was to recognize
the energies of the infinite past, for these strong energy forces
have been around for much longer than Buddhism.
These two characters
represent some fundamental issues of life and a balance of Yin and
Yang, the balance of dark and light, male and female, and many other
dualities of life that are inter-connected. Opposites, but equal
qualities of the Taoist philosophy, which are part of Mahayana Buddhism,
as it relates to, in principle and function.
